Statement of Purpose

I love the tension between the old and the new in my imagery. I am

constantly effected by my environment--the sea and the culture surrounding

me intersect with my interest in medieval art and history.

I observe geometric patterns and create biomorphic worlds based on

my fascination with the images I see under the microscope, from natural

material I collect; from medieval paintings and from ancient scientific imagery.

I have been influenced by how ornamental imagery communicates

and represents a specific place in time, since within each decorative genre we

learn about a culture’s nature,  its religions and its myths as responses

to the environment from which they developed.

My Calendar Spheres perfectly

reflect these interests. They are carefully crafted and carefully painted

to celebrate each month of the year. In making them I use designs based on

microscopic natural images, other natural designs and ancient ornamental

symbolism.

Making Calendar Spheres involves the use of materials

I find  both sensuous and gritty.  I build my spheres with Styrofoam

and plaster, carefully sculpting a near-perfect sphere yet maintaining an

imperfect human quality by shaping them with my hands.  The materials

I use have become familiar to me through my teaching experiences, my

restoring of old homes and pure experimentation.

Integrating calendars with my paintings is also an abstraction of my interests

in time and space. I believe that time represents a celebration of life. It

marks all elements of our existences. It reminds us of our fleeting nature.

It endures beyond us.
