Biography

Creating is a way of life for me. For as long as I can remember, I have been drawn to the artist’s life.

As a child in Southern California, I gathered my inspiration from the incredible mountains that surrounded the lush gardens and beautiful waters of the West Coast.  During this time, within the context of the tumultuous 1960s and early 1970s, my mother introduced my sisters and I to ballet, music, architecture, painting and sculpture.

In the mid-1970s, my world was turned upside down when we moved to Providence, Rhode Island. This, the dark side of my childhood, was the extreme opposite of my life in California. During that dark time I used the power of emotion filtered through my imagination to make art in my mind. It was a turning point. I realized I had a gift. I could develop my images purely from within, they were in my soul and  I felt compelled to express them.

In my early teens, drawing and painting became my way of life. The illusion of space and the grit and smell of the medium drew me to painting.  As I continued the process of putting everything down on paper, I realized that my personal interests would greatly affect my images. I saw common themes in my drawings as I communicated my ideas, psyche and interests to the outside world via my work..  I was developing a unique language based on geometry, ornamental imagery and architecture.  I also discovered that I had a love for the figure and was determined to create figure drawings that would rival even Michaelangelo’s.  This compulsion helped develop my love for the Renaissance, medieval ornamental imagery and medieval history.

I received my BFA at Rhode Island School of Design and a MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art in painting. After a strong foundation in drawing and painting in school, I started my professional journey in the arts as an abstract geometric painter. I showed throughout New England, New York, Boston and Rhode Island. I worked for many artists, taught, worked in high end galleries as a consultant and copied famous paintings for money.

I have recently introduced my new art objects, Calendar Spheres via craft venues.  My Calendar Sphere is the most concrete visual I have developed to communicate my ideas and bring my art to the world.  I believe artist's ideas are learning tools for the world to enjoy and make use of. Although I’ve generally shown my past work in the rarified air of the classic gallery environment, I now feel a need to minimize the separation from audience that’s often inherent in such venues.  So I’ve shaped my work into a format that can be more clearly understood by more people. I’m excited by this new direction. It remains true to my vision.
